We finally solved the issue of the jumping print head that was impacting several of our 3d printers.  We would consistently get solid prints in the morning or late afternoon, but midday would often see prints start to shift horizontally or vertically as the bot moved to higher levels on the z-axis.  After experimenting with dozens of fixes — from cleaned power sources to shorter USB cables...

Odd Rostock Printer Behavior
After building a number of Prusa and MendelMax 3d printers, we recently decided to make a Rostock delta robot printer.  While the Rostock design is quite cool, we were experiencing what appeared to be a weird firmware bug with the machine. The Rostock would home correctly, with top+bottom or top only endstops, but as soon as it finished homing the print head would shoot for the right-rear corner...

California-based Intellectual Ventures was established by former Microsoft technology boss Nathan Mhyrvold. It now owns and controls about 40,000 technology patents.  I believe that the US patent system is broken and this company is only making it worse.

Could 3D printing really shift the trade balance? →
In my opinion it might make a small shift to the trade balance, but we won’t see that change happen anytime soon. Plus, the printers will probably be made overseas eventually!

There Is No Reason For Any Individual To Have A 3D... →
There was a time when we couldn’t imagine a reason why anyone would need a computer at home. With the endless possibilities of this industry, I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss home manufacturing. In the short term, I think that cloud manufacturing will lead the industry. However,  I that think if the price of printers begin to decrease the cost of entry for the home manufacturer will...

Wood Composite Printing - some feedback →
I have ordered some of the wood filament and am excited to see how it prints. It sounds like it is more like working with PLA than actual wood. Still, it will be interesting to see what types of materials will be printable in the future.

One of our dentists has a machine that cuts away material to make a new tooth from a 3D scan. Cool to see that 3D printing might be the next phase in dentistry. I find the advancements in medical and health 3D printing to be very interesting. Can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Traditionally, individual facial expressions would be sculpted by hand out of clay, but the producers of ParaNorman built up a library of 8,800 3D-printed faces for the main character alone, which could be used in various sequences, to give him about 1.5 million different expressions.
